You’re in debt up to your eyeballs? There is no get out of debt free card like that wonderful break you get in Monopoly. If you declare bankruptcy, your credit score is zinged. If you walk away, not only will you be hounded for the rest of your life by bill collectors, but you could also face jail time.
To get out of debt, there are some easy steps (not so easy, but sensible at least):
- Stop spending beyond your means.
- Get an extra job to pay off bills.
- Keep at it.
More enlightened people than me, however, give better detailed advice over at CNBC.com in a series titled Til Debt Do Us Part. Here’s an excerpt,
Stop Eating Out. Eating out costs way more than buying food and cooking at home, not to mention that the latter option is much healthier as well. Make cooking dinner a family activity, something that can be done to together to make the experience more enjoyable — and when you’re done cooking, sit down and have dinner together, discuss the day’s events and catch up.
A lot of really great advice can be found here… it’s worth it to watch the whole slide show.
