Chalk this up as something I learned today… if you paint your roof white, you conserve energy.
Builders have long known that white roofs reflect the sun and save on air conditioning. Even so, the application has largely remained in the realm of commercial buildings. California has gone so far as to mandate that flat-roofed commercial structures have white roofs since 2005. Still, it’s rare to see one on a single family home. It’s one of those things that’s part of the collective, I suppose, where we keep doing things because that’s the way they’ve always been done, never questioning the rationale. I think that the ubiquitous dark shingles seen across America may have been an emulation of the slate wealthier Europeans used for shingles.

As you mention, in the commercial roofing business we have been installing white roofing products for years. The the energy savings is dramatic.
