Real estate blogger queen Teresa Boardman wrote an interesting post about neighborhoods. Today she addresses the question, "Can you recommend a good neighborhood?"
As a licensed Realtor I can not steer home buyers away from a neighborhood or into a neighborhood. It is against the law and could cost me my real estate license.
Amen to that Teresa. What can we do? We can advise buyers to contact the local police stations - not 911, just the general number - and ask for crime statistics (e.g., types of crimes, frequency of runs to neighborhoods, etc.). I also suggest buyers drive through the neighborhood on different days and at various times to get a quick check on their comfort level. In addition, I always advise them to look at the yards - are they well kept? Are their couches on porches? Cars on blocks? Finally, I suggest my buyers go to the Family Watchdog website to see if there are nearby sex offenders.
Happy House-Hunting Buyers!
